Virgil (Publius Vergilius Maro) (70-19 BC) – Roman poet

Virgil was another Latin poet who enjoyed the patronage of Maecenas (p. 41), and who endeared himself to Augustus. His kind of verse was different from that of Horace (p. 41), for it was often written in long, ballad lengths, and in what is called heroic language. One of his most remarkable works was a long narrative poem, called by us today the Aeneid. This was the imaginary story of the wanderings of Prince Aeneas, one of the sons of Priam, King of Troy. Aeneas escaped from the holocaust of the fall of Troy in about 1200 BC and came to Italy to found, it was said, what we now know as the Latin race.

Virgil also described in some detail the life of a peasant farmer in Italy of his time, in a series of poems known as the Georgies.
