Flamininus, Titus Quinctius (c.230-c.174 BC) – Roman general
This very able commander was remembered by Romans for two crushing vietories against the Macedonians under King Philip V of Macedon in Greece, at Antigonea in 198 and at Cynoscephalae in 197. But the Greeks of that century remembered Flamininus for something else. His second victory had put an end to Macedonian dominion over the Greek states and soon after he had won it, he held a meeting in the stadium at Corinth, on the occasion of the Isthmian games for 196. Thousands of Greeks attended, and before the games began, Flamininus announced through the medium of heralds’ voices that Rome guaranteed Greek independence. Almost at once a tremendous roar went up among the great surging crowd, rising to a crescendo that could be heard at sea, several miles away.
