Sophocles (c.495-c.406 BC) – Greek tragic playwright
Sophocles’ output of tragic plays was somewhat greater than that of Aeschylus (p. 17) but, again, only a handful has survived. Of these, Oedipus Rex (about a king who loved and then murdered his mother), Antigone, and Electra, are perhaps the best known to-day.
This interesting man was a commander of the Athenian army in the time of Pericles, and he was also a great conversationalist and thinker, and counted amongst his close friends Socrates, Plato, Aristophanes and Herodotus (pp. 19, 20). In some ways his play construction may be said to be like that of Aeschylus, but for the most part he was an entirely original writer. He is credited with introducing, for the first time, a third actor on the stage in a single scene. Up to then, there had never been more than two, except for the chorus or silent crowds. This idea made the play move more swiftly and gave it depth.
