Socrates (c.470-c.400 BC) – Athenian philosopher
Socrates is often said to have been the wisest man of the ancient world. After an early career as an artist, he turned to philosophy, and soon established himself as a thinker of great originality. He developed a method of inquiry and instruction which was a series of questions aimed at obtaining a clear and consistent expression of something supposed to be implicitly understood by all reasonable human beings. He was always searching for the truth, always anxious to make the complex problems of life easier to understand. In pursuit of this end he had perforce to question many accepted beliefs and conventions and this made him enemies.
While Pericles was alive, Socrates was safe, for the great statesman admired him. But after Pericles’ death, Socrates’ enemies began to put the pressure on to get him to revoke much of what he said. He would not do this, but continued working on what he thought needed to be questioned. Eventually, he was tried for corrupting the young and sentenced to death by drinking the deadly poison hemlock.
