Shih Huang Ti (259—210 BC) – Chinese emperor of Ch’in dynasty (246-210 BC)

This great emperor was a man of contrast. He successfully beat off attacks on Chinese territory by barbarians from Mongolia, united the several regions of the land, and arranged the building of the Great Wall of China to keep the new nation safe from attack. This astonishing engineering feat, probably the most amazing in all world history, was accomplished between 218 and 204. It was over 2,240 kilometres long, with large, square, castellated turrets positioned regularly along its entire length. Then he built roads and canals and generally improved the condition of towns and the countryside.

But he was also a cruel man. The wall was built not so much by teams of willing workers as by gangs of cowed peasants and political prisoners. He developed a great hatred of Chinese scholars and philosophers, seeing in them implacable opponents to his ideas and ambitions to build a new imperial dynasty. So he ordered the arrest and execution of hundreds of scholars, and to prevent others from following their ideas, he instigated the wholesale destruction of their works. This included the writings of Confucius, Mencius and many others, and up and down the land his troops built bonfires of scrolls and texts. This was a great tragedy, for many of the original works were lost and they had to be written down again from memory in later years when Huang Ti was dead.
