Regulus, Marcus Atilius (d. c.250 BC) Roman general

Regulus was one of those splendid Roman generals who, made of the old virtues of courage, hard-work and rectitude, refused to take the easy way out in problems. In the first war with Carthage he smashed a Carthaginian fleet, invaded Africa and defeated a Carthaginian army in the field. But a year later, in 255, he was himself beaten in battle and captured.

The Carthaginians offered to let him go back home provided that he would agree to negotiate peace and then return with an exchange of prisoners. When he got to Rome, however, the Senate would not hear of peace terms. They were out to break Carthaginian power. So Regulus kept his word, went back to Carthage and said he had failed. They arrested him and tortured him to death.
