Ramses II (13th century BC)
Ancient Egyptian ruler (c. 1290-c. 1220 BC)
Possibly Ramses II is the best known of all the ancient Egyptian rulers. If this is so, it is in no small part due to the great belief he had in himself and his enthusiasm for self-advertisement. He fought a great battle with the powerful Hittite Empire, at Kadesh in Syria, in about 1288, and he claimed it as a victory. It was, however, more a victory for the Hittites, and in the peace negotiations which eventually followed, in c.1272 BC, they certainly preserved their empire.
Thereafter, Ramses spent most of his reign adorning Egypt with grand temples and other public building schemes. Among these were major additions to the temples at Karnak and Luxor and a temple cut in rock at Abu-Simbel. He was the pharaoh who oppressed the Hebrews and whom Moses begged ‘Let my people go!’, when he asked for the Israelites to be allowed to return to Canaan.
