Pyrrhus (c.31 8-272 BC) – King of Epirus (Greece) (307—272 BC)
When one talks about a Pyrrhic victory it means a victory achieved only at great cost to the winners. This comes from the battle of Asculum in southern Italy at which Pyrrhus, the king of the Greek state of Epirus, defeated the Romans in 279, but said afterwards that he had never encountered such tough and brave troops. ‘With men like those I could have conquered the world.’
Pyrrhus wanted to make his small kingdom a great empire, and he got involved in the war between the Greeks in Tarentum in southern Italy and the Romans. He decided to support Tarentum and at Heraclea in 280, by using a charge of elephants, he routed a Roman army and chased it off the field. When he fought them again at Asculum, they had learned how to deal with elephants. But they were nonetheless defeated, although they inflicted heavy casualties on Pyrrhus.
