Praxiteles (flourished 4th century BC) – Athenian sculptor

While Pheidias (p. 17) is probably rightly entitled to first place in the ranks of the ancient Greek sculptors, many experts place Praxiteles a close second. It seems that the Romans, no mean judges of taste and beauty, considered him supreme for the delicacy with which he portrayed human bodies in all manner of postures. Many of their own craftsmen modelled their works on his style.

It is sad that there is only one surviving work that vereli be said with any probability to have been created by Praxiteles, and that is the statue of Hermes with the child Dionysus, now in the Olympia Museum.
