Pheidias (flourished 5th century BC) – Greek sculptor

The age of Pericles (p. 18) produced many sculptors in Greece, but none is considered to have excelled the supreme craftsmanship of Pheidias. He was taught by Ageladas, and when Pericles became the first man in Athens, he commissioned Pheidias to undertake several works. One was a series of sculptures on the great Parthenon building. Another was a fine statue of Zeus, the king of the gods, at Elis.

Pheidias is believed to have got into trouble with some of Pericles’ enemies and to have died in prison.
