Odoacer, (or Odouacer) – (d.493 AD) Barbarian German warrior
Odoacer was a barbarian warrior of German descent. He led the revolt which resulted in the expulsion of Romulus Augustulus, the very last Western Roman Emperor, in 476. He then became ruler of the rest of the empire and it seems he governed well. Meanwhile, the emperor of the Eastern Roman empire, Zeno, concerned at Odoacer’s success, encouraged Theodoric, chief of the Ostrogoths, to invade Italy in 489. Odoacer was besieged in Ravenna for nearly three years, and then he had to surrender because of shortage of food. Soon afterwards he was murdered.
