Agrippa, Marcus Vipsanius (63-12 BC) – Roman general and statesman

In his own way, Agrippa was one of the most wonderful men of Roman history. He was one of those very rare individuals who have many first rate qualities, but who are prepared to devote them solely to the advancement of their fellow men, with no thought of being the ‘boss’.

Agrippa made Augustus (p. 42) what he later became – absolute and supreme head of the Roman state. This he did by staying tactfully in the background at the right times, pushing his friend forward, guiding him and taking on many arduous jobs, like running the government. He also led Roman navies very successfully into sea battles and destroyed the fleet of Antony (p. 39) and Cleopatra (p. 40) at Actium in 31.

Agrippa came from comparatively humble beginnings, and he rose to the highest ranks of government almost entirely by his love of hard work and his great organizing genius. For about ten years, 23-12 BC he was chief minister to Augustus, and in that time he never once was heard to say that he wanted his friend’s position as Emperor, or that he could do it better himself. The success of Augustus’ long and peaceful reign was largely due to Agrippa.
