Marcus Aurelius Antoninus – (1 21-1 80 AD) – Roman emperor (161-180 AD)
Marcus Aurelius was Emperor of Rome from 161 to 180 AD. He was the nephew of Emperor Antoninus Pius (137-161) whom he succeeded.
His life was not altogether a happy one. Much of his reign was taken up with fighting one barbarian race after another, on the borders of the empire. This distressed him, for he was by nature peace-loving and kindly. During his free hours, and there cannot have been many of them, he studied philosophy and science. He thought a lot about human conduct, and produced a series of rules of human behaviour, which came to be called his Meditations. This book, written in Greek, is among the most famous Roman works of the 2nd century AD.
Marcus Aurelius contracted the plague on one of his campaigns, this time in Austria, and he died while in command of his armies.
