Catilina, Lucius Sergius (Catiline) – (c.108-62 BC) – Roman politician
Catiline was a man of high birth but low morals, who aspired to reach the highest position in the state. In 67 he was governor of North Africa, but because of his extremely expensive tastes he found he had to stoop to all sorts of corruption to raise money (as many governors did) and in doing so he brought hardships to the province. When he returned to Rome, he was prosecuted for extortion.
A year or so later, he stood for the consulship, but was defeated. To campaign he had borrowed vast sums, and now he could not pay. So he got together with some other discontented and impoverished men and plotted to murder the consuls and seize power.
His plans were betrayed to the consul Cicero (p. 38) who had Catiline’s associates arrested. Catiline got away, but was hunted down in Etruria where he had gone to join a friend with a small gang of armed men, and in a battle in which he fought desperately, Catiline was slain.
