Lucullus, Lucius Licinius (1st century BC, d. c.60 BC) – Roman general and art connoisseur

Lucullus was consul in 74. At the end of his term he went to Asia Minor in command of the army to deal with Mith-radates of Pontus and his ally, Tigranes of Armenia. In a series of sound campaigns, Lucullus defeated both men several times, but he seemed unable to bring the war to an end. Worse, his aristocratic upbringing and his natural haughtiness made him very unpopular with the troops and although they were doing well in the matter of rewards in Asia they mutinied. The Senate sent Pompey (p. 34) out to replace him.

Lucullus returned home laden with riches and thereafter devoted his life to the pursuit of pleasure, always of a tasteful kind. He encouraged poets, artists and craftsmen. He gave magnificent feasts. He built a beautiful home and lavished money on its decoration. Later ages have used the word Lucullan to describe luxurious but tasteful living.
