Leonidas (5th century BC) – Spartan king (c.490-A80 BC)

When the Persian king, Xerxes I (p. 16) launched his invasion of Greece in about 480, he had to go through the narrow pass at Thermopylae to chase the main Greek army retreating into central Greece. There, he found an unexpected obstacle, a picked force of some 300 Spartans noted for their cool bravery and endurance. They were led by their king, Leonidas. The Persian king ordered the front troops of his army to charge through the pass, and a desperate battle followed. Wave after wave of Persians were sent in, and were severely mauled by the Spartans. By evening time, Leonidas and all his men had been slain, but the Persians had been greatly delayed and the Greek army had been given a respite.
