Homeros(9th century BC)- Greek poet and story-teller
Homer’s life is a mystery. He is credited with two great books on the war between the Greeks and the Trojans, of the thirteenth century BC, the Iliad, (the story of the ten years of struggle) and the Odyssey (the tale of the ten years of wandering of the Greek commander, Odysseus). But there is a school of thought that considers the texts to have been the result of collaboration between many poets. (The same has been said of Shakespeare’s works.) Herodotus (p. 19) appeared quite convinced that there was a story-teller called Homer and that he lived in the 9th century. Judging from the great respect that is felt for Herodotus, it seems certainly possible that Homer, said to have been a Greek from Smyrna, did indeed collect the facts of the Trojan war (which we know from archaeological evidence was fought) and weave them into a tale which he decorated with much legendary and magical detail. Behind the stories of giants like Ajax and Achilles, there must lie some truth.
