Gregory the Great – (c.540-604 AD) – Pope (590-604 AD)
Gregory was born in Rome. He served the emperor as a civilian, but longed to enter a monastery. One day he was walking in the streets of the city when he was shown some young Anglo-Saxon children in the slave market. He is reported to have exclaimed, ‘Non Angli, sed Angeli,’ which means, ‘They are not Angles, they are Angels.’ He wanted to bring Christianity to England, but it was not until 597? by which time he was Pope, that he could send Augustine to Canterbury with the express charge of converting the Anglo-Saxons to the Church.
Gregory’s reign as Pope is considered to have provided the best administration the church ever had in nearly two thousand years. He was responsible for the complete organization of public services and rituals, and for the introduction and simplification of sacred chants. He was also instrumental in lessening slavery.
