Gelimer – (6th century AD) – Last Vandal king (530-533 AD)
Gelimer was the last of the barbarian Vandal kings of North Africa. In 530 he deposed his cousin, Hilderic, who had been pro-Roman, and he ignored the objections of the Byzantine emperor Justinian Y (p. 59). So Justinian sent Belisarius (p. 59), his great general, to Africa to put Gelimer in his place. In 533 there was a great battle fought not far from Carthage and Gelimer was defeated. He had been so confident of victory that he had prepared a huge feast in a large tent to celebrate. As it was, Belisarius and his men went into the tent instead, to the consternation of the servants and chefs.
Gelimer was not put to death. He was exiled to Asia Minor, where he died a year later.
