Catullus, Gaius Valerius (c.84-54 BC) Roman lyric poet
This young and handsome poet wrote some of the loveliest romantic verse in the Latin language. He was a very emotional person, sad and introspective, who for some years was desperately in love with a notoriously loose-living woman, Clodia, the sister of Publius Clodius Pulcher, a Roman political agitator. Clodia did not return his love – she loved only pleasures and vice and this broke Catullus’ heart.
Catullus wrote more than one hundred lyric poems, many of them addressed to ‘Lesbia’, his pet name for Clodia. He also wrote stingingly insulting verses about well known political figures whom he did not like. One of these was Caesar, who forgave him because he, also a man of letters, admired his lyric poetry.
