Plinius Secundus, Gaius (The Younger) – (62-113 AD) – Roman statesman
Pliny was a statesman who flourished during the splendid reign of the Emperor Trajan (98-117). He was the nephew of another Pliny, called the Elder, who wrote about many historical, scientific and natural things, and who died during the great eruption of Vesuvius in 79, which completely enveloped Pompeii in lava and dust. He was trying to observe how the volcano worked when he was caught off his guard.
Pliny the Younger became governor of the province of Bithynia in about 111. During this time he kept up a lengthy correspondence with the Emperor Trajan, much of which has survived and which throws a fascinating light on many aspects of Roman life and provincial government. One letter also mentioned Christians and Trajan replied to this one by saying that Pliny was not to persecute them, providing they were willing to give up believing that their God was superior to the Emperor of Rome.
