Maecenas, Gaius (c.70—8 BC) – Roman statesman
Maecenas was a statesman friend of young Octavius, who became the Emperor Augustus p. 42). He looked after aifairs in Rome while Octavius and Agrippa were fighting Pompey the Younger, the son of Pompey the Great (p. 34). And after Octavius and Agrippa had beaten Antony and Cleopatra’s forces at Actium in 31, Maecenas persuaded Octavius to assume the rank of emperor. He did not at first, for he became Princeps, which really meant first among equals, but when he accepted the title Augustus, which meant ‘revered’, he was in fact becoming emperor, something his great uncle Julius Caesar had considered.
Maecenas made a lot of money in his career, and when he was about 50, he retired to private life, continuing to patronize artists, poets and writers. All the same, he was always ready to give Augustus his advice if it was sought.
