Stilicho, Flavius – (c.359-408 AD) – Roman general
Stilicho was a Vandal barbarian by birth, but he won his way into the counsels of the Eastern Roman Emperor, Theodosius I, who in 384 sent him to Persia as an ambassador. Stilicho came home a few years later and married Theodosius’ niece, Serena, and in 394 he was sent to Italy to look after young Honorius, who had become emperor in the West at the age of ten. He managed the government well, and he also successfully fought off an invasion attempt by Alaric the Goth (p. 54) in Greece in about 400. Alaric invaded North Italy in 403, but Stilicho again defeated him, and three years later when the Gothic chief, Radagasius, brought a huge host of barbarians against North Italy, Stilicho defeated him, too.
Then, when Stilicho suggested that Alaric be invited to combine with the Romans to defend themselves against another barbarian host, some of those around Honorius who were jealous of Stilicho, accused him of treason. Honorius weakly gave in and allowed the great soldier to be murdered.
