Euripides (5th century BC) – Greek playwright
Euripides was a contemporary of the Greek playwrights Aeschylus (p. 17) and Sophocles (p. 18), and the three of them were probably the finest dramatists of ancient Greece. Euripides had been a painter, but took up literature in later life, and he produced many plays. About twenty believed to have been written by him have survived, and these have had a profound and lasting effect on Western theatre. They include Alcestis, Medea, Hippolytus, Orestes and Electra, all well-known figures of Greek mythology or ancient history. These plays are notable for the skill of their plots, the drama and simplicity of their dialogue, and their tragic content.
