Tacitus, Cornelius – (c.55—c.117 AD) – Roman politician and historian.
Tacitus was one of the most distinguished of all Roman historians. He had had a full career as statesman and army commander, and he was also the son-in-law of the great Julius Agricola, governor of Britain, who defeated the Piets in Scotland and nearly led an expedition to Ireland. This put him in a good position to write detailed histories of the various peoples against whom Rome fought in his time.
Tacitus’ main works were his Histories, an account of the political, domestic and military affairs of the Emperors from Galba (68 AD) to Domitian (81 -96), his Germania, which was about the German tribes and their neighbours, and finally the life of his father-in-law, Agricola. This gives a good picture of Britain towards the end of the 1st century AD.
