Cleisthenes (6th—5th century BC) – Athenian popular statesman
Pisistratus had been succeeded as chief magistrate by a son who proved hopelessly unworthy of so great a father. So, the popular party, dreading a restoration of aristocratic power, elected Cleisthenes as their leader. Their faith was justified, for Cleisthenes ruled well for many years. He expanded Solon’s new popular assembly into a Council of Five Hundred, all of whose members were to be elected by the people, and this meant every free man. The new Council was divided for easier working into committees of fifty, which managed the government for a tenth part of the year. This arrangement was astonishingly advanced for 2,500 years ago, even for a hundred years ago : the U. K. did not grant suffrage to all men until the 1880s.
