Cimon (507-449 BC) – Athenian general and statesman
Cimon was the son of the great Miltiades (p. 12) and he was in command of the Athenian fleet in its continuing war with Persia after the battle of Salamis (480). You will remember that Themistocles (p. 16) got into trouble with the Spartan element in Greece. Cimon was one of the Athenian statesmen who favoured closer links with Sparta. For a while his views prevailed, as he was one of the leading commanders, but a new political figure, Pericles (p. 18), began to make his name as a keen Athenian patriot who wanted Athens as leader of the city states. Although Pericles was largely responsible for Cimon’s banishment, the two men were eventually reconciled.
