Brutus, Lucius Junius (6th century BC) – First Consul of Rome

The seventh king of Rome, Tarquinius Superbus (Tarquin the Arrogant) (534-509) was so bad that a number of senators got together and drove him out, vowing never to have another king in Rome. To give effect to this they created a new structure of government. Two of their number, each year, were to be elected to the office of consul, with equal powers. The first consul was Lucius Junius Brutus, who had led the senators against Tarquin in 509. His colleague was Gaius Collatinus.

This Brutus was a very severe man. When he heard that two of his sons had been conspiring to bring Tarquin back to the throne, he ordered them to be executed. There was no mercy to be seen in his eyes as the sentence was carried out.
