Bede, The Venerable – (673-735 AD) – English scholar

The Venerable Bede, as he has long been known in English history, was a brilliant scholar and theologian, who spent practically all of his long life in the famous monastery of Jarrow in Northumberland. This had been founded by Benedict Biscop, who took Bede into his care as an orphan of seven.

Bede became a priest in about 703, but stayed on at Jarrow where he taught Greek, Latin, Hebrew and theology. During his years he also studied a great deal of history very closely, especially that of England, of Britain before the Anglo-Saxons, and of Rome. He produced several works, which have become among the most important histories of Britain of all time. One was his Ecclesiastical History of the English Nation.
