Asoka (3rd century BC) – Mauryan emperor of India (273-232 BC)
Asoka was for many centuries – and is still now in some Indian circles – regarded as the greatest of all their many kings and emperors. He ruled the Mauryan Empire from about 273 to about 232. Asoka united large parts of India int&an empire which corresponded to nearly all Moslem India, Pakistan and Afghanistan today. But in the effort, Asoka became increasingly sickened by the horrors of warfare. He had become devoted to Buddhism, and he longed to help all his people to know the great teacher’s ideas of living. So he spent the best part of the next thirty or so years in spreading the faith, through meetings, national councils and regional discussions.
Asoka made Buddhism the state’s religion, and he signalled this by engraving religious instructions on rocks and pillars in many parts of India, some of which have been found and deciphered in recent years. At the same time, he did not neglect the business of government, nor did he miss the chance of adorning his capital, Patna, or other towns, with splendid buildings. It was he who encouraged architects to construct buildings of stone so that they should last. And many of them have – up to the present day.
