Ashurbanipal (7th century BC) – Assyrian king (c.669-c.640 BC)
Ashurbanipal was the grandson of Sennacherib (p. 10). Such was his fame as a conqueror and ruler that he was known as ‘King of the World’. He raised Assyria to a greatness that it had not known before, but he is especially remarkable for his great interest in, and encouragement of, more peaceful achievements. He built a splendid palace at Nineveh. On some of the interior walls were wonderful sculptures in relief. He built a library and collected together many clay tablets, of various shapes, which contained records, poems, histories, laws and all kinds of written matter. He set up schools and he built roads and public buildings.
Towards the end of his reign (when the events were well documented on clay tablets) his empire came increasingly under attack from the Chaldeans.
