Aristophanes (c.450-c.385 BC) – Athenian playwright
Ancient Greece produced many first playwrights during the 5th century BC, especially in the days of Pericles. But none was so amusing and at the same time so penetrating as Aristophanes. This master of the comic play with the undertone of serious political or social criticism is said to have written more than forty works, only a quarter of which have come down to us. In these he poked fun at all kinds of people, including well-known figures like Socrates whom he counted as a friend. Much of his language was disgracefully rude to people of the time, although it was cleverly dressed in highly comical terms.
One of his plays to be frequently produced today in the twentieth century is Lysistrata. It is about the women of a certain Greek city who refuse to let their husbands come home to them, unless they decide to give up the whole career of soldiering for good. It is extremely funny, but it is also a lecture on the futility of war.
