Ardashir I – (3rd century AD) – Sassanid Persian ruler (226-241 AD)
Ardashir was the grandson of Sassan, a Persian noble. In about 224 AD he led a revolt against the Parthian government which had been ruling Persia for many years, and the last Parthian king was killed. Ardashir seized the vacant throne and thus began a new dynasty of kings, known as the Sassanids. These were more truly of Persian origin, and under their dynasty the great country made great progress.
Persia became a powerful state, balancing that of Rome in the Near East. Ardashir himself encouraged the building of towns and roads to connect them. He also strengthened the ties between the central government and the local authorities in the Persian provinces. He captured several cities in the western part which had been lost to Rome, including Nisibis and Carrhae. He made the empire powerful enough that his son, Sapor I, was actually able to defeat the Romans in a major battle and capture the emperor Valerian in person, in 260.
