Antoninus Pius – (86-161 AD) – Roman emperor (138-161 AD)
Titus Aurelius Fulvus Boionius Arrius was of a Gallic family. He rose through the ranks to become governor of Asia and in 138 was adopted by the emperor Hadrian (p. 50). Hadrian then died almost at once and Titus succeeded him, taking the name Antoninus.
His reign was a peaceful and interesting one, in which the arts, literature, trade and building all flourished under his encouragement and patronage. The only real trouble he had was with the Piets in Scotland (then northern Britain) and he had a huge earthen wall built across the land, from the Forth to the Clyde. Men remembered his reign and he was nicknamed Pius, which means blessed.
