Antiochus the Great (242-187 BC) King of Syria (223-187 BC)
The Seleucid kingdom of Syria and its neighbouring lands had been founded by Seleucus, one of Alexander the Great’s leading generals, in the late 3rd century. In 223, Seleucus’ great grandson, Antiochus, had become king, and he set out on a policy of expanding the power of Syria and of resisting the more powerful nations of Europe and the Near East, namely, Rome, Parthia and Egypt. He conquered Parthia and Bactria (Afghanistan), defeated the Egyptians and even invaded Greece. But in Greece he ran up against the Romans who, after the defeat of the Macedonian king, Philip V, at Cynoscephalae in 197, had guaranteed the Greeks their independence.
Twice Antiochus took on a great Roman army, and twice he was thoroughly beaten, at Thermopylae in 191 and at Magnesia in 190. He had to give up nearly all his conquests. Two years later he was slain while plundering a sacred temple.
