Alaric – (c.370-410 AD) – Gothic chief

Alaric was a barbarian Goth leader who spent some years in the service of the Roman army. In those hard times for the Roman empire it was customary for Europeans to employ one lot of barbarians to help beat off another lot. But this policy proved dangerous, for the first barbarians grew to like the luxuries of Rome and were liable to turn on their employers.

Alaric was extremely disappointed not to receive preferment after he had helped the Emperor Theodosius. So he left Rome and got himself made chief of the Visigoths. He invaded Greece, but was temporarily held off by the Romans. Then he served again in the Roman army under the Emperor Honorius. One would think the Romans would have learned, but they did not, and in 410 Alaric, upset once again, turned on the capital and sacked it.
