Abu-Bakr – (573-634 AD) – First Moslem caliph

Abu-Bakr was the right hand man and leading general of the prophet Mohammed (p. 60). He was also the father of one of Mohammed’s wives. When the prophet died in 632, Abu was chosen as caliph of the new empire which the prophet’s followers were beginning to build up in the Near East and in the Mediterranean. Abu defeated the Byzantine emperor, Heraclius (p. 61) in 633 and he also crushed a Persian army.
